The University of Maine’s School of Food and Agriculture is seeking a professional staff member to manage the Dr. Matthew Highland’s Pilot Plant and Licensed Commercial Kitchen. The Pilot Plant is a state-of-the-art facility established in 2003 to support and promote the research and education goals of faculty, students, and the food industry in the state of Maine. It is a 2800 square foot facility equipped to carry out fundamental unit processes in the food industry including freezing, drying, steaming, mixing, pasteurizing, and cooking, as well as cheese, muscle food, and specialty foods manufacturing. During the past 10 years it has been pivotal for conducting academic research, applied research projects in support of food businesses, industry workshops, and for providing teaching and learning opportunities for students in commercial kitchen and pilot plant environments. A highly effective, well-organized pilot plant manager will be critical in supporting the facility’s research and teaching mission for academic and industry clients.
The successful candidate will have a M.S. in Food Science, or closely related field; B.S. degree in Food Science, or closely related field, with relevant significant experience will be considered. Experience with food businesses and food processing is required. Demonstrated computer skills, including Microsoft Office, statistical software programs, and internet proficiency is required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellent organizational skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and positive interpersonal skills. Successful experience in conducting food science research is preferred. The demonstrated ability to supervise and manage a food science pilot plant is preferred along with experience with equipment maintenance, repair, and experience with pilot plant safety issues and programs is preferred. This is a full-time, 12 month position with a salary range of $53,000 – $59,000 depending upon qualifications and skills. Reappointment in this position is contingent upon successful performance and continued funding. Appropriate background checks will be required.
